By Kevin Brown, Information Security Analyst

October marks the 15th Annual National Cybersecurity Awareness Month. Since 2004, National Cybersecurity Awareness Month (NCSAM) has represented a collaborative effort between government, nonprofit and industry to ensure that all Americans have the information they need to stay safer and more secure online.

NCSAM’s annual overarching theme is “Our Shared Responsibility” because no individual, business or government entity is solely responsible for securing the internet, and everyone must play a role in protecting their part of cyberspace, including the devices and networks they use.

If everyone does their part – implementing stronger security practices, raising community awareness, educating vulnerable audiences or training employees – our interconnected world will be safer, more resistant from attacks and more resilient if an attack occurs.

Connected devices are essential to our professional and personal lives, and criminals have gravitated to these platforms as well. Many common crimes—like theft, fraud, harassment, and abuse—are now carried out online, using new technologies and tactics. Others, like cyber intrusions and attacks on critical infrastructure, have emerged as our dependence on connected systems revealed new vulnerabilities.

Successfully mitigating these threats relies on a combination of information sharing, prevention efforts, and enforcement work. Government agencies, law enforcement, the private sector, and individuals all have a role to play. It's important for everyone to understand the role they can play in promoting a safer, more secure and more trusted internet.

Throughout this month we will be publishing a weekly message containing materials that will be used to inform and equip our employees to become more cyber aware.

The Airwatch App for Mobile Devices

Attention Users in CANADA - It's MANDATORY on your company-issued smart phone

There are still employees that haven't downloaded the AirWatch App to their company-issued smart phones. Are you one of them?

What is AirWatch?

AirWatch is a Mobile Device Management (MDM) service that allows EDF to provide better security for smartphones, tablets, and most mobile devices that are used for work-related purposes. AirWatch was selected as the enterprise solution to manage mobile devices.

Why do we need the AirWatch service?

Mobile devices have become increasingly powerful tools, and their use in the work-place is increasing. As the differences between mobile devices and traditional computers drop we need to take similar steps to protect our devices and minimize the chances of a data breach. The AirWatch service allows us to do this.

What do I need to do?

Instructions for enrollment were sent to everyone with a company-issued phone. You can also find them here for Apple iOS devices and here for Android devices. It only takes a few minutes to install.

Visit the AirWatch page on ECRM for more information. If you have any problems with your install, contact the Service Desk for help.

Asset Optimization Ultracapacitor Project

by Adeline Renaux, Sr Mgr - O&M Strategic Projects

Installation Team, Layton Miller, Skye Long, Weston Stein, Tyler Knight, Chris Downey (missing Gary Parks)

Last year, PRE and Asset Optimization identified a $4.8M potential saving by replacing pitch batteries in GE turbines with a newer and more reliable technology: Ultracapacitors. An ultracapacitor, like a battery, is a device for storing electrical energy. Ultracapacitors store energy electrostatically, allowing for a higher energy density, a quicker release of energy, and longer useful life, as compared to a battery.

The installation of ultracapacitors directly supports Asset Optimization’s goal to exceed 96% performance-based availability in 2018, by eliminating the top cause of forced outage downtime for the GE fleet. Site operations also benefits from the ultracapacitor installation, as we expected they will have to make fewer unscheduled maintenance visits to replace failed pitch batteries.

On September 13th, 2018, the first ultracapacitor installation was completed at the Wapsipinicon Wind Project closely followed by the Spearville 3 Wind Project. It took around four hours to retrofit the entire turbine, removing 12 batteries and installing three ultracapacitors. Retrofits at both sites will continue over the next two years (through 2020) and expand to three additional EDF-owned GE sites in the near future.

This cross functional undertaking clearly represents the mission of the combined Asset Optimization organization, where PRE, Operations, Supply Chain, Strategic Growth and Generation worked together to optimize performance of EDF-owned assets. A big thank you to the project team (George Dean, Phil Gauthier, Ninochska Maldonado, Steven Withrow, Robert Burrows, Lyndsey Shuckerow, Charles Kasmer, Anne Mc Murray, Conor Jarvis, Addy Renaux) and our Site Managers (Andrew Baker and Trevor Clifton) for their full support and enthusiasm during this journey!

Below are a few pictures of an installation at Wapsipinicon:

Compliance Team Locks in over $1MM in NERC/GADS Sales in 2018

The sales success resulted from a combined effort of the Compliance group, the O&M Customer Account Managers and Business Development personnel who have been busy promoting this value-added service by the Asset Optimization Group.

Collecting, processing, and reporting to NERC can be an enormous burden, but EDF Renewables offers customers automated systems to accomplish the daily, monthly, and quarterly tasks to meet NERC’s compliance requirements.

In August, Todd Chwialkowski – Senior NERC Compliance Specialist & Lyrae Anderson – OCC Regulatory Manager, presented an EDF Renewables Case Study: Lessons Learned Implementing Compliance Requirements, at the NAES NERC Conference in Seattle.

And in July they presented a webinar on the same topic.

Red Pine Open House and Carnival

by Jinnie Hall, Community Relations Manager

The Red Pine Wind Project, in Minnesota, hosted a Community Open House at the Red Pine Operations & Maintenance Facility recently, offering the community an opportunity to take an O&M Facility tour and learn about the project while enjoying carnival style games and an ice cream sundae and popcorn bar. Despite the torrential rain and storms, we had a great turnout!  Both young and old found the ‘behind the scenes’ tour fascinating, especially how the turbines automatically shut down when winds are too high and/or during lightning.
